Project brief: to design and make a piece of contemporary furniture with reference to the Huguenots - French protestant refugees who arrived in the East End of London having fled France to escape from radical papist persecutors. Their skills in weaving, silversmithing, ceramics and furniture inspired a revolution in craftmanship and making.
This piece was inspired by the Huguenot ceramicist Bernard Palissy - using the two dimensional gekko motif which is inlaid into the inner drawer base as a link to the three dimensional gekko which sometimes appears on his plates.
It was selected for an exhibition of contemporary design inspired by the Huguenots and shown in the Huguenot Church, Soho Square as part of London’s SOHO CREATE festival.

MCM Box Kite
Stained cherry wood with coloured fabrics (supplied by Camira)
Designed for an exhibition hosted by architects BDP, during Clerkenwell Design Week. The exhibition, called ‘Kite Show’, was inspired by the Bauhaus tradition of holding an annual kite day for its staff and students along with the townsfolk of Weimar.
My ‘kite’ form is inspired by a box kite superstructure... and the rectangular coloured panels by mid-century, minimal stacking tables by Bauhaus master Josef Albers.
My intention was to deploy this never-meant-to-fly ‘kite’ as a side table, with the addition of a glass top.
Xander Balance Stools
Inspired through studying Alexander Technique, the XANDER Balance Stools were designed to aid the sitter in finding natural balance; forming a tripod with the stool and the sitter's feet, thereby keeping back and spine oriented correctly
